:cut:

[Battlegrounds] Developer Insight: Dark Gifts

Well met!

We hope you’re excited for the new Dark Gift system coming to Battlegrounds next season! If you want an explainer on the basics, please check out our Season 14 Announcement blog post.

Similar to previous systems like Trinkets, we tried to design Dark Gifts to “just work” and provide players with interesting options whenever they choose to use the button. However, we know that some players want as much information as possible so they can plan out their strategy. So if you’d like to know more about how Dark Gifts work, we’re here to help!

Minion offerings

Let’s start with the minion offerings. When the Dark Discovery button unlocks on Turn 3, it will only offer Tier 2 minions. Each turn, the Tier of eligible minions will improve based on the following table:

TurnMinion tier
3Tier 2
4Tier 2 or Tier 3
5Tier 3
6Tier 3 or Tier 4
7Tier 4
8Tier 4 or Tier 5
9Tier 4 or Tier 5 or Tier 6
10Tier 5 or Tier 6

Nightmare Lord Xavius’ Hero Power also uses these same rules whenever it triggers. For example, on Turn 8, you will be offered Tier 4 or Tier 5 minions.

Additional Offering Rules

There are some additional offering rules and restrictions to help ensure that the minions offered through Dark Discovery will be more interesting to you:
  • You cannot be offered Battlecry or Choose One minions before Turn 5
  • You cannot be offered Magnetic minions
  • You cannot be offered minions with a “when you sell this” effect (such as Freedealing Gambler, Fire Baller, Patient Scout, etc.)
  • You cannot be offered minions that are intended to stay in your hand (such as Old Soul, Bream Counter, etc.)
  • Starting from Turn 6 onwards, one of the offered minions is guaranteed to be of your most common type
  • Some specific minions cannot be offered due to gameplay or balance concerns (such as Leeroy Jenkins and Deadly Spore)
