Defense Matrix: Peripheral VisionGreetings, Heroes! We hope you’re enjoying Season 18 launch week and your fingers aren’t getting too exhausted opening all those loot boxes.
Here at the Defense Matrix Team, we’ve been coordinating with our fellow creatives across Team 4 to roll out some exciting new initiatives that should make the Overwatch 2 community feel safer and more enabled to achieve their goals. From safeguarding innovative ways to play and keeping match chat a little more positive, we’ve got a lot of cool things to show you. Let’s get into it!
Of Mice and KeyboardsSeason 18 brings a new challenge and opportunity for Console aficionados to join a new Competitive environment and truly test their skills. For the first time, native Mouse and Keyboard support is enabled in Overwatch 2 for Console players who prefer not to use a controller.
Console Players Using Mouse and KeyboardIf you decide to use a Mouse and Keyboard on Console, you’ll be prompted to join the PC Pool—which will be renamed to the Mouse and Keyboard Pool in a future update—to battle players using the same peripherals. Our other matchmaking pool, the Console Pool, will be renamed to the Controller Pool. That’s where you’ll stay if you’re still rocking the sticks. You can manually switch to either pool in Gameplay Options, too.
Joining the Mouse and Keyboard Pool (as a Console player) will allow you to use the internal MMR, ranks, and skill ratings from that pool if you previously played in the PC Pool; all game modes will be separate from your skill ranks and ratings that you earned in the Controller Pool.
With great opportunity comes great responsibility, so we’ve taken steps to ensure Overwatch 2 stays fair and fun. If you’re on a Mouse and Keyboard and
don’t accept the switch to the appropriate pool, your inputs will not work for gameplay, and you’ll only be able to use the peripherals for chat and other text-input fields. Aim assist features aren’t available whatsoever in the Competitive Mouse and Keyboard Pool, even if you pick up a Controller without switching back to the Controller pool.
Console Players Using ControllersThe above changes don’t apply if you’re on Console (without Mouse and Keyboard enabled) and group up with a PC-based friend to jump into Cross-Play enabled matches, like Quick Play or Arcade. You’ll still get aim assist in those situations!;
Console fans will also be getting some bonus upgrades. In future seasons, we’re looking to improve the experience of Console players, especially as they play Stadium. Game-wide aim assist upgrades and a better third-person perspective (3p) experience in Stadium should be headed your way once the team irons out the details.
PC Players Using ControllersIf you’re one of the brave few who choose to rock a controller on a PC platform, you’ll stay in the Mouse and Keyboard Pool for competitive integrity reasons.
Cheating Peripherals TakedownThe new Mouse and Keyboard support will impact how we action users who previously used unapproved third-party peripherals to gain an advantage over players in the Controller Pool. Bypassing the set restrictions in that pool with unapproved peripherals will be considered cheating and actions will be taken on your account.
Previously, we deployed technology to help find and detect players who were using those peripherals on consoles. We enacted over
23,000 actions against players since that deployment. This included players who were directly using unapproved peripherals as well as players who grouped up with them to benefit from that unfair advantage. However, we’ve seen a need to adapt to new workarounds and we’re now ready to take more aggressive actions against those who try to circumvent the competitive integrity of our console players.
We’ve rolled out new tech for Season 18 that should help us spot players that use unapproved peripherals faster and with more reliability. We’re also laying down harsher consequences on users of unapproved peripherals, since the legitimate opportunity to compete using Mouse and Keyboard on an even playing field is now available, regardless of whether you own a PC or console.
Previously, we would warn and restrict those users as well as sending them to the PC Pool. This was mostly actioned at Competitive levels above Diamond. In Season 18, we’re cracking down further: continuing to use unapproved peripherals and devices in the Controller Pool will result in a full game account ban regardless of the player’s rank or mode.
Did You See That, Chat?Text chat in Overwatch 2 should be a safe, friendly space to interact with other players and maybe trade a little lighthearted banter. Our new Real-Time Text Moderation technology aims to make this a more consistent reality!
When another player types a message that could be harmful or offensive, our system will hide the entire message from the rest of the lobby. If you’re up to it, you can choose to see the message in its entirety (and report if necessary), directly from the text chat feed. This technology was successfully implemented in World of Warcraft and has helped make the player experience across Azeroth a friendlier space for everyone. Now, this tech has now made its way to Overwatch. If you’re so inclined, the filter can be turned off in Social Options, however by no means does this make it acceptable to use harmful or offensive chat on anyone. We continue to strictly enforce our
Blizzard In-Game Code of Conduct, and anyone who continues to be disrespectful to others will find their account silenced, suspended, or in the case of severe or repeat offenses, banned from the game.
Swinging the Ban HammerWe’ll end on a high note with a massive milestone for the Defense Matrix team: over
1 million accounts have now been banned for cheating since the launch of Overwatch 2! This includes players who used aimbots, wallhacks, and other cheats as well as those who grouped up with known cheaters. While the effort to stop cheaters and the cheats they use is an ongoing effort, we want to reiterate our commitment to ensuring the outcome of every Overwatch match is determined by skill and passion, and not through unfair advantages.
Thank you for reading and keeping Overwatch fun, fair, and fantastic!
